5 Tips To Make Moving Easier With Kids

GRIGSBY GROUP

Moving with kids can be a challenging experience, but with some planning and creativity, you can make the process smoother for everyone. Here are five ways to make moving easier with kids:

1. Involve Your Child/Children in the Process

  • Give Them Tasks: Let your kids help with age-appropriate tasks like packing their toys or labeling boxes. This involvement can make them feel included and less anxious about the move.

  • Discuss the Move: Talk to your children about the move, explaining why it’s happening and what to expect. Answer their questions and address any concerns they might have.

2. Create a Moving-Day Kit for Each Child

  • Essentials Bag: Pack a small bag with their favorite toys, snacks, a change of clothes, and other comfort items. This will help keep them occupied and comfortable during the transition. *See example below- taken from greatdaymoving

  • New Environment Exploration: Once you arrive at the new home, let them explore and set up their space. It helps them feel more at home in the new environment.

3. Stick to a Routine

  • Maintain Normalcy: Try to keep daily routines like mealtimes, bedtimes, and other familiar activities consistent during the move. This stability can help reduce stress and keep things as normal as possible.

  • Incorporate Fun Activities: Plan breaks with fun activities to keep the mood light.

  • Visit a local park, have a picnic, or explore nearby attractions.

4. Plan the Move Around Their Schedule

  • Avoid Major Changes: If possible, avoid moving during times of significant change, like starting a new school year. Moving during school breaks or holidays can provide a smoother transition.

  • School and Friend Visits: If your kids are in school, try to arrange visits to their new school before the move. Also, schedule playdates with friends they’ll be leaving behind to help with the emotional transition.

5. Get Help from Friends, Family, or Professionals

  • Childcare Assistance: On the day of the move, consider having a friend or family member watch your kids. This can free you up to focus on the logistics without worrying about keeping them entertained.

  • Hire Movers: Professional movers can make the process much faster and less stressful. It allows you to focus more on your children’s needs rather than the heavy lifting.

By preparing ahead and keeping your kids’ needs in mind, you can make the moving experience a positive one for the whole family.
